After earning his BFA at the University of Minnesota Duluth, Maury Aaseng began illustrating as a freelancer for children’s educational non-fiction publications in San Diego, CA. While there, his work expanded into the realm of medical and anatomical art. He collaborated with authors and experts to create illustrations for textbooks and publications illuminating concepts in the health sciences, human anatomy, patient education and nature. His portfolio also includes cartooning, watercolor, logos, military equipment illustrations, line-art, digital art, and custom paintings. He has authored several books demonstrating techniques to other budding artists for Walter Foster Publishing.
His work first won recognition in the juried exhibition Upstream People Gallery in 2008. In 2016 his watercolor art was displayed in his solo exhibition called Saturated Life at the Great Lakes Aquarium. In 2025 his painting Paleo Pub was chosen by the Otherworldly Arts Collective to be featured in their Juried show at the ALTR Gallery and Minneapolis, MN.
His children’s picture book, Pollywog! Not a Frog which he wrote and illustrated in watercolor, was published by Pegasus Publishing in 2025.
Maury resides with his wife and two children in Duluth, Minnesota near the shores of Lake Superior.
